    🙂

  3. the article is quite critical of rushing babies through their learning milestones.

for instance, it cites literature suggesting that overbearing kids with reading exercises at young age (<5-6 y) has no significant advantage effects by the time they are 11-12, and actually, earlier readers seems in general less motivated that late comers (over burned, I may say).

other IQ studies suggest that high scoring individual begin to mature their potential around age 11-13 while regular kids peak at 6-8. why is not clear. what is known is that nerve cell myelination completes around age 5-7 for most people. maybe very intelligent kids need a longer period of play time and that may help with neuronal networking and give them an edge later.

then you have di differentiate the kind of skills you are considering: language is an area where we do well by starting earlier. but we did not evolve to read or memorize words, numbers, capitals etc. we were organized group hunters first: we thrive in group playing, spatial skills, planning, tactics.

a very good book that, as parent of a baby boy who will be delivered just next Friday, I liked a lot is this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Einstein-Never-Used-Flash-Cards/dp/1579546951

it stresses exposure to learning through play, parental engagement and no-pressure, building on the natural child development without rushing through the steps. my upbringing was similarly at extremely low pressure, but I think my parents trick was not to lack in tools. e.g. get many books and a globe in the house and your kid will be curious about them sort of speak.

I’ll try to stick to it and let you know how it worked out! 😉

sure I hope he likes math, physics and science, but he wants to be a graphic novels artist is just fine with me!

  4. @ Max:

  5. makes sense. but as the article points out here there is a quite upsetting tendency of American middle-high class parents to juice up their kids with flash cards, pre-school teaching and multimedia tools to eventually get their kids into Ivy League Universities! time will tell, but I am afraid it will just be a generation of frustrated overachievers ready to crush down and/or slash back at their parents followinf the first disappointment of life.
